Our client, Liverpool College, had building contractors on site ready to build extra classroom facilities when COVID struck. All building work contracts were suspended. Contractors were taken off site.
We had been told that our client needed 18 trees removed, together with all debris, tree stumps removed and the area of approx. 1,000sqm x 800 sqm flattened. Out of the blue, the entire work was postponed. COVID regulations and the need for social distancing stopped everything. Everyone was stymied; the school, builders, architects and ourselves as landscape contracting tree surgeons. We all had to wait on Government go ahead.
Short Notice - Bad Weather
When news we could resume work came, it came suddenly. The building contractors would be back on site within 5 days. We had a very short time frame to complete the site tree clearance. Remove 18 trees, pull up the tree roots, flatten and level the site. It was an uphill task with heavy rain forecasted for many of the days ahead.
Covid regulation uncertainty gave us just a 5 days to mobilise and get the work done. Builders were ready to pile drive into the site.
The tree removal and stump removal started on a Wednesday. We worked straight through until Sunday evening.
The tree removal was carried out during some torrential, rainy days. There was no alternative except to work against time and weather! We aimed to deliver the site clearance for the school - The building contractor's project schedule allowed no leeway.
The trees and roots needed to be cleared so that footings and drains could be installed.
Local Knowledge & contacts Matter! The difference? This large site was cleared by tight deadline
The demand to react within an extremely tight time frame called for really valuable local knowledge. Who could give the professional plant and have availability to work within the deadline?
North West Landscapes Ltd has 36+ years in landscape and tree work contracting. Because of our deep local knowledge and relationships, we called on a dependable local JCB plant contractor, Victoria Plant Hire. They've been established for over 40 years. I've worked with the company's owner, Tony Walsh, on many NHS contracts. This has forged an excellent relationship of trust between us. It was because of this special relationship, we knew and valued their abilities to react to demanding challenges.
Victoria Plant Hire came on site at short notice. They really speeded up the work of clearing tree stumps stumps and tree roots. Their plant helped massively in the work of levelling the site grounds.
What happened to the timber removed from the site?
With our contacts amongst local merchants, some of the wood was made available for wood burning stoves, larger pieces given to wood sculptors for carving. Wood which was chopped on site was reused for mulching.

Tree Preservation & Care Policy
We take the removal of trees seriously. We don't like taking good trees out. We always recommend to our clients with a large site, that they get an independent tree survey. This will protect the client's insurance. It will pick out notable, diseased trees for removal due to safety concerns.
At North West Landscapes Ltd we work closely with the local authority to ensure all relevant regulations are met. We have an excellent relationship with local council planning in Liverpool, Merseyside and Cheshire. This has been built up over many years. Local Officers and planning respect our professional standards. They are confident that we always work to specifications and BS 3998.
They trust us based on long experience, confident that we always adhere to their remits. A planning officer might stipulate that we keep the shape and form of a tree, may want to keep as many mature trees as possible. They've inspected our work, so they know we will work to their guidelines. Planning Officers will not give permission to unscrupulous builders planning to remove trees without replacing them.
